For a few years now I have been intrigued by Window Tiling Managers, romanticized by Hollywood through the mis-portrayal of Hacker culture certainly left an impression. What practical uses could someone like myself find with i3 and terminal based applications?
Lightweight
i3 comes in at just over 128MB from a cold boot
I’m currently running at 229MB with the following applications active and in use.
- cmus a terminal based music player
- vim to write this post
- ranger a terminal based file manager
- htop system processes viewer
The tiny memory footprint means an ancient netbook like this Toshiba NB505 from the dark ages of 2010 runs smooth quiet and cold while leaving enough processing power in reserve for multi-tasking if I choose to open up GIMP for a little image editing.
In all it’s fast and efficient but nothing makes this old computer a speed demon.
